Why Does Your Child Need Fillings?
When a tooth gets decayed it has to be restored back to it’s original form. Our local pediatric dentists do this by using a silver (amalgam) filling material or a tooth colored (composite) filling material. Usually the silver filling will be put on the back teeth so it won’t be seen when you smile.
Amalgam Fillings
Amalgam is stronger and lasts longer than tooth colored fillings. Amalgam is a mixture of metals and will last up to twenty years. Local anesthetic is usually used to numb the area to be worked on. After the anesthesia wears off the filling will be ready for use. Just be cautious with very crunchy foods such as chips and nuts. After twenty-four hours the filling material will be set enough to eat crunchier foods. Avoid hot or chewy foods until the anesthetic is gone so the tongue and cheeks don’t get damaged from accidental biting.
Composite Fillings
Composite or tooth colored fillings is a resin or plastic material and is as close to the color and feel of the front teeth as possible. There is a composite available for the back teeth that is called posterior composite. It is made a bit stronger and will last longer than the composite for the front teeth. It is still matches the natural tooth color and maintains it shape even during chewing which makes composites a great choice for your kids teeth.
How Do I Know Which One To Choose?
You should discuss with our local Concord pediatric dentist to find out which option is best for your children’s oral health as every child is different and has different needs. If your child has a very wide smile and their back teeth are clearly visible in your mouth you may prefer the composites over an amalgam because of color difference. Amalgam filling material has been around for years and it contains metal that some people are allergic to. This may be another good reason to change the fillings over to composites at some point
